Role: Civil and structural engineering

Location:

Project Details

We worked closely with Peel Logistics Properties and project managers Knight Webb to breathe new life into a former steelworks site within Sheffield City Region’s Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District, creating two distribution logistics units totally 180,000 square feet in the first phase of development.

We provided civil and structural engineering services, along with a comprehensive due diligence assessment for the brownfield scheme. Named after steel pioneer Henry Bessemer, the site now houses some of Sheffield’s most ambitious and world-leading manufacturers including ITM Power’s electrolyser ‘Gigafactory’.

As well as being a former steelworks, the site is also on the side of an historic valley, which has been infilled causing highly variable ground conditions across almost 50 acres. To mitigate this, we employed targeted dynamic compaction ground improvement process techniques across the site, alleviating the need to dig below the site’s high water table.

The first phase of work completed in 2019, and we have now provided design services to enable the delivery of the second phase.
